Abstract Water is an essential element for life. Freshwater comprises 3% of the total water on earth. Only a small percentage (0.01%) of this freshwater is available for human use (Hinrichsen and Tacio, 2002). Unluckily, even this small proportion of freshwater is under enormous stress due to rapid population growth, urbanization and unsustainable consumption of water in agriculture and industry. Pollution of the aquatic environment is a serious and increasing problem (Sasaki et al., 1997). |
