Abstract

Many steel pedestrian bridges structures have been constructed using various structural systems during the past decades. The purpose of any structural design process is to create a safe design that satisfies all of the design code criteria while attempting to minimize the design’s cost. Optimization in structural design is a new concept developed and applied in the last few decades to identify the optimum designs using mathematical algorithms and techniques that are more accurate than human judgment. This research presents an optimization approach for minimizing the cost of steel pedestrian bridges structures.
Optimization is now considered a construction management tool that can help companies optimize cost and time. The designs are carefully evaluated to identify which will achieve or enhance the basic functionality required and minimize the project’s overall cost without affecting quality or performance. This study’s main topics to be discussed are structural systems for steel pedestrian bridges.
A 180 steel pedestrian bridges models were carried out as a parametric study. The conclusions provided in this study are based on a huge body of work that is supplemented by a review of research literature and an analysis of selecting the optimal structural system via cost optimization for steel pedestrian bridges. Thus, the study provides the essential information required by architects and structural engineers to choose the optimal structural design for steel pedestrian bridges.
