Abstract This study was designed to estimate the relative frequency of NP in the knees of OA Egyptian patients using the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs(LANSS),Douleur Neuropathique in 4 questions(DN4) & PainDETECT questionnaires and to relate this to patients’ and disease characteristics. The study found in Egyptian adults of 40 years old &older with symptomatic knee OA 15.5 % had symptoms of NP, localized to their knees and is significantly related to age, KL &VAS. However, no relation was found between NP, localized to the knee and the quadriceps strength . These findings suggest that neuropathic mechanisms may contribute to the OA pain experience. So, it should be kept in mind that patients with knee OA that describe intense pain may have a neuropathic component involved in the clinical condition. This should be taken into account while planning the treatment of these patients. |
