Abstract

Reproductive cancer is an important health problem since it leads to mortality and morbidity of women in all over the world. Cancer is the second most common cause of death, and among the cancer deaths, the ovarian cancer is in the fourth, the endometrial cancer is in the seventh and the cervical cancer is in the ninth rank (Bekar et al., 2013).
The Aim of the study: To evaluate the effect of nursing guideline on Nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding chemotherapy for women with reproductive cancer.
This aim was achieved through the following:
 Assessing level of knowledge and practices for the study nurses regarding chemotherapy.
 Developing and implementing the educational guidelines for the study nurses regarding chemotherapy.
 Evaluating effect of guideline on nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding chemotherapy.
 Assessing women’s satisfaction regarding nursing care they received.
Research hypothesis: Nursing guideline has positive effect on Nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding chemotherapy, which had direct effect on women’s satisfaction.
A Quasi- experimental study was utilized, at oncology unit, in Nasser Institute Hospital for 3 days/week in morning and afternoon shifts for six months. A convenient sample consists of (40 nurses) who were worked and accepted to participate in study, at previously mentioned study setting.
I. Tool was used for data collection; 1) Self- administered structured questionnaire schedule which included two parts: The first part: assessed nurse’s general characteristics. The second part: assessed nurses’ knowledge regarding reproductive cancer and chemotherapy.
II. An observational checklist: it was adapted from Standardizing Assessment Competencies of Oncology Nurses Working in Ambulatory Care and Chemotherapy order Assessment and Review (Beaver, et al., 2016). It was used to evaluate practices of nurses regarding chemotherapy for women with reproductive cancer (pre – post and follow up test).
III. Women’s Satisfaction with nursing care Scale (PSNCS) (Tang, Soong & Lim, 2013). It was used to determine their level of satisfaction regarding care they received (post test).
A Supportive instruction guideline was designed by researcher according knowledge and practical skills related to reproductive cancer and chemotherapy administration.
The pilot study was conducted for 10 %(4 nurses) of total sample at selective all nurses who were worked at previously mentioned study setting.
Main results of the present study were as follows:
 There was statistically significant between pre &post immediately, and post three months of intervention related to nurse’s Knowledge about reproductive cancer and chemotherapy
 There was statistically significant difference between pre & post immediately, and post three months of intervention related to total score of nurse’s practice(P value <0.05).
 There were (55%) of women’s moderately satisfied and (30%) were highly satisfied while of them (15%) were low satisfied with nursing care they received.
 There was statistically significant relation between post immediately and post three months of intervention related to general characteristics (Age, Qualification, Years of Experience) with Nurses’ Knowledge (P value < 0.05).
 There was statistically significant relation between post immediately and post three months of intervention related to general characteristics (Age, Qualification, Years of Experience) with Nurses’ practice (P value < 0.05).
 There was a highly significant positive relation between nurses’ knowledge and nurses’ practice and Women’s satisfaction post guidelines intervention as nurse’s knowledge increases, women’s satisfaction increases and nurse’s practice increases, patients` satisfaction increases, p-value (<0.001).
In Conclusion & Recommendations
The present study findings showed that nursing guideline had positive effect on nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding chemotherapy which had direct effect on women’s satisfaction with nursing care they received. Also, it was clear from the current study that findings support the research hypothesis.
Based on the results of the present study the following recommendations are suggested:
 Refreshing courses pre-service and in-services training programs to enhance nurse’s practical skills at oncology units.
 Nurses should be updated on their knowledge through attending seminars, workshops, lectures and reviewing researches.
 An orientation program for newly graduated nurses in oncology unit should be prepared.
Further Research:
 Further research is recommended to identify factors that effect on nurse’s knowledge and their practice related to oncology patient receiving chemotherapy.
 Replicate present study on large number of nurses and in other governmental and private sector.
