Abstract

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia remains a major complication of prematurity and can have significant impact on long -term pulmonary sequelae and adverse neurodevelopment out comes.
Aim of study: this study aimed to assess nurses, knowledge and practices regarding care of preterm neonate with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Research designs: descriptive study. Setting: study conducted at Neonatal Intensive care units, affiliated to Ain Shams University and Tanta University. Subjects: A purposive sample composed of 100 nurses worked at the previously mentioned setting and 50 preterm neonates found at the previously mentioned setting. Tools of Data collection: (1) A pre designed Questionnaire sheet to assess nurses, knowledge regarding care of preterm neonates with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and (2) Observational check list to assess nurses, practices regarding care of preterm neonates with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Results: there was highly statistically significant differences between nurses’ level of knowledge and their level of practices regarding care of preterm neonates with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Conclusion: The current study finding concluded that more than half of studied nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge regarding care of preterm neonates with BPD. Also; the majority of nurses had satisfactory performance. The main Recommendations is conducting an orientation education programs or refresher courses about preterm neonates and BPD prevention should be designed for nurses in order to enhance their knowledge and practice.
