Abstract

Fetal growth restriction is a prevalent and complicated obstetric problem that has a higher risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Detection of restricted fetal growth is very crucial as appropriate diagnosis and management can result in a favorable result.
The aim of the research discussed was to propose fetal growth restriction score to identify restricted fetal growth fetuses.
Our study was performed on 180 pregnant women at El-Shatby Maternity Hospital, Alexandria.
Multiple variables were tested including ultrasonography parameters and maternal risk elements related to IUGR.
Fetal growth restriction score was developed depending on multiple ultrasonography variables.
The restricted fetal growth score contains both ultrasonographic and maternal risk factor variables.
This integration will increase the accuracy of detection of fetal growth restriction in fetuses.
This study emphasizes on the importance of IUGR as a postnatal clinical diagnosis regardless of the birth weight centile and to develop a scoring system to improve accuracy of ultrasonography parameters as a method of antenatal diagnosis of IUGR.
Our study has developed a scoring system that can be used in any ultrasound facility which can increase accuracy of antenatal diagnosis of IUGR. The scoring system for IUGR consists of 7 different parameters, 6 ultrasonography parameters and one maternal risk factor.
High scores support normality diagnosis and low scores support fetal growth restriction.
The scoring for each parameter is as follows:
Abdominal circumference:
- If the AC is 2 SD less than the mean, a score of 0 is given.
- If the AC is one SD less than the mean a score of 1 is given.
- AC at or greater than the mean for gestational age is given a score of 2 or 3 or 4 according to the table (16) below.
Head circumference to abdominal circumference ratio:
- If HC/AC is 2 SD above the mean, a score of 0 is given.
- If 1 SD above the mean, a score of 0.5 is given.
