Abstract Container terminals’ transportation sector is responsible for a large portion of the greenhouse gas emissions compared to any other means of transportation. This is mostly due to the presence of many equipment that are used to move containers between the various areas of container terminals. One of these equipment is the Yard Crane (YC), which is considered as the largest source of energy consumption in container terminals. In literature, YC scheduling problems investigate objectives such as: improving the efficiency of yard processes, decreasing the delayed workloads, reducing the recurred costs, and other factors without consideration of the energy consumption factor. In this research, an integer programming mathematical model for the yard crane scheduling problem is introduced. The objective of the proposed model is to minimize the total energy consumption that results from the inter-block transfers of the YCs. The model is solved using Gurobi optimization solver which deploys a branch-and-bound algorithm. Verification of the model is performed using manual calculations, and then it was validated using a set of 10 instances. The results showed that the fuel consumption decreased significantly when adapting the proposed model for the energy consumption optimization. Moreover, several sensitivity analysis experiments were conducted to test the effect of changing workload values and distribution on the objective function. Finally, a case study at Alexandria Container and Cargo Handling company is investigated and compared with the actual case scenario. |
