Abstract

Shear reinforcement is one of the main contributory factors in enhancing punching shear resistance of the reinforced concrete slab- column connections. Since these connections are susceptible to a suddenly local failure named as punching shear failure, it might cause apenetration of supporting column through the slab. Thereby, a progressive collapse may happen to the whole building. Thus, the main objectives of the herein presented study are studying the behavior of the slab-column connections and the efficiency of shear reinforcement systems. Therefore, an experimental study was performed in this research including twelve interior reinforced concrete two-way slab specimens having plan dimensions of 1100 mm × 1100 mm which were tested under square patch loading. Test specimens were basically divided into two sets according to punching shear reinforcement type. The first set included five top headed shear studs welded with bottom flat steel strip. The second set was provided with closed conventional stirrups. The considered parameters were the shear reinforcement type, spacing, orientation and layout arrangement. Prior to punching failure, a sufficiently enough flexural reinforcement ratio was evaluated to rule out the possibility of flexural failure. Indicative results presented the efficiency of using steel shear reinforcement. In comparison with control specimens without shear reinforcement, the study showed improvements by 37 % and 25% for the punching shear strength of headed shear studs and closed stirrups, respectively.Consequently, results indicated improvement of shear strength for studs near to 1.5 times that for closed stirrups. It was generally concluded that, radial arrangement of shear studs outperformed the orthogonal arrangement as far as the strength and ductility were concerned.
