Abstract

Background: The kidney plays a vital role in the metabolism of minerals and bone health. It is not only the target organ of several regulating hormones such as parathormon (PTH) and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23), but it is also the main organ that activates vitamin D.
Aim of the Work: The aim of our study was to compare the effect of online hemodiafiltration (HDF) dialysis versus hemodialysis using high flux dialyzer on bone markers patients in Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital.
Patients and Methods: this was a Prospective study in Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital for 4 months. Our study was conducted on 50 adult patients attending Dialysis unit at Ain Shams University specialized hospital on regular hemodialysis divided into: group 1: with hemodialysis using high flux dialyzer. group 2: with online HDF.
Results: Age, sex hemoglobin, albumin, calcium and PTH show no significant difference between both groups. Phospharus and bone ALP show higher signicance with patients on hemodialysis using high flux dialyzer than on HDF. HDF reavealed better removal of potassium and BUN.
Conclusion: Hemodialysis patients using high flux dialyzer has higher bone turnover than online HDF.
