Abstract UAE is defined as selective transmission of an embolic agent via a catheter to uterine arteries. It is an angiographic procedure; the maneuver is done by using femoral artery approach, with catheterization then embolization of one or both uterine arteries. Uterine arteriography is done under fluoroscopy; the embolic material is transmitted into the uterine artery for its occlusion. This procedure may be repeated in the other uterine artery that allows global assessment of uterine flow and enables better technical control of the procedure. UAE has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective treatment for uterine myomas and can be considered a first-line therapy. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) produces symptom relief similar to that of surgery with fewer major complications. |
