Abstract

English Summary
The corrosion of carbon steel has been widely studied due to its industrial importance in different acidic, alkaline, and salt as aggressive corrosion media. It is a natural process, which causes a huge disaster in many industries in particular oil and gas industry and costs governments a lot of money so it’s a big problem in economy of a country, but we can reduce it by several methods as the environment need. This work discusses the effect of Morpholinium cationic surfactants as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in petroleum wells formation water containing 3.0 M HCl (acidic formation water solution) in addition to study the effect of the prepared compounds as Biocides for SRB.
This work contains three chapters: -
Chapter 1: ”Introduction’’
An introduction about corrosion (definition, mechanism, types and protection techniques) and introduction about surfactant (definition, classification and applications) and finally the definition of petroleum wells formation water. A literature survey on the previous studies on the effect of cationic surfactants as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in formation water and acidic solution also their applications as biocide against SRB is given.
Chapter 2: ”Materials and Experimental Techniques”
Experimental part includes description of steps of synthesis of cationic surfactants used, preparation of solutions, and preparation of SRB culture medium, carbon steel electrode pretreatment, and electrolytic cell working procedures, weight loss measurements, and electrochemical measurements including potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
Chapter3: “Results and discussion”
This chapter presents the Results and discussion of the data obtained. And is divided into six sections as follows:
Section (1):
Show the procedure of synthesis of three types of Morpholinium cationic surfactants (MCS-10, MCS-12 and MCS-14).
Section (2):
Contains the results and discussion of surface parameters measurement of the prepared cationic surfactants under different temperatures. The data reveals that, the surface tension and critical micelle concentration for all prepared cationic surfactants compounds decreases with increasing both hydrophobic chain length and temperature.
Section (3):
Contains the result and discussion of weight loss measurements for carbon steel in acidic formation water solution containing different concentrations of inhibitors at different temperatures and different exposure time. The data reveals that, inhibition efficiency increased with inhibitor concentration increment and the temperature effect on inhibition efficiency has two different trends. The adsorption of isotherm for these surfactants on carbon steel surface followed Villamil adsorption isotherm and exhibits mixed type adsorption. The values of thermodynamic activation parameters such as activation energy (Ea), the enthalpy of activation (ΔHa) and the entropy of activation (ΔSa) were calculated.
Section (4):
Contains the result and discussion of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements for carbon steel in acidic formation water solution containing different concentrations of the synthesized inhibitors at room temperature. The data reveals that, the increase of polarization resistance with increasing inhibitor concentration indicates that these compounds have the ability to inhibit the corrosion rate of carbon steel in according to adsorption mechanism (formation of a surface film).
Section (5):
Contains the result and discussion of Potentiodynamic polarization measurements for carbon steel in acidic formation water solution containing different concentrations of inhibitors at room temperature. The data reveals that, the prepared cationic surfactants act as mixed type inhibitor also the inhibition efficiency increased with inhibitor concentration increase.
Section (6):
Includes the result of biocidal effect of the prepared compounds against SRB. The data divulges that, the prepared compounds displayed a good biological activity against SRB growth.
