Abstract

Poisoning is a public health problem worldwide. Also consider one of the most common causes for attendance in emergency departments (EDs). The critical care nurses play an essential role in assessing poisoning patient at emergency unit .Early identification followed by effective management in the initial stages increases the rate of survival among patients with poisoning. Aim: This study aimed to assess critical care nurses’ knowledge and practices about toxicological emergencies. Study Design: A descriptive study design was used. Setting: This study conducted at poisoning center in Al-Mansura city, emergency department in Al-Manzala central hospital and emergency department El-Salam hospital. Subjects: A convenient sample of 81 nurses included in the study. Tools: Two tools used for data collection, nurses’ knowledge questionnaire sheet, and nurses’ practices observational checklist. Results: 54.3% of the studied nurses had poor knowledge and 76.5% of them had acceptable practices about toxicological emergencies. Conclusion: more than half of the studied nurses had poor knowledge and most of the studied nurses had acceptable practices about toxicological emergencies. There was a positive statistical significant correlation between overall nurses’ knowledge and practices about toxicological emergencies.
