Abstract

This randomized controlled study was performed at the departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in Menoufia University Hospital. Thirty six patients who were admitted to the obstetrics & gynaecology department with uterine fibroids during pregnancy for cesarean myomectomy were included. A control group of an equal number of women undergoing cesarean section without myomectomy was included for comparison.
In the current study, no statistically significant differences were noted between both groups, neither in the participants’ demographic and clinical data, nor in the characteristics of uterine fibroids (site, size, type and number) (p> 0.05). No statistically significant difference was noted between both groups as regards the indication for surgery or the incidence of postoperative fever (p > 0.05).
Our data indicated that in the current study, a significant difference (14 min) in the duration of surgery between the groups was noted. In addition, the duration of hospital stay differed significantly between both groups. However, CM group was only about 11 hours longer for the myomectomy group.
In the present study, pregnant women who underwent cesarean myomectomy showed larger mean amount of blood loss, larger number of cases indicating drain insertion, larger mean amount of fluid in drain, and higher mean pain sores, with high statistically significant difference (p < 0.01). Statistically significant lower mean postoperative Hb value was noted also in group II. Despite these statistically significant differences between
