Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical, functional and radiological outcome of distal tibial fractures managed using Expert nailing technique. A prospective study was conducted on 26 patients with extra-articular distal tibial fractures managed with multilocking intramedullary tibial nail (ETN) in period between May 2020 to June 2021.These were 22 males and 4 females with mean age 40 years. Follow up period was at least 6 months.
ETN in distal tibial metaphyseal fractures proved to be an efficient implant in our study population. Fracture union was demonstrated in about 92.31% of the cases within 6 months of surgery and all patients achieved fracture union within 1 year after surgery. The delayed unions were treated with dynamization and bone marrow injection .Fixation of the fibula provided additional stability to distal tibia fracture and helped maintain reduction and stability.
Anterior knee pain was the most common complication which was reported in 4 cases in our study managed with NSAID and physiotherapy. One case was complicated with superficial infection and treated with IV antibiotics according to culture and sensitivity test. Range of motion of knee and ankle was excellent at the end of follow up period for all cases.
This study recommends Expert nail as an efficient technique for fixation of distal tibial fractures with rapid recovery time and low soft tissue complications.
