Abstract

Egypt is facing a major problem in energy consumption in buildings. However, office buildings require expensive cooling systems, as well as lighting for workplaces, which leads to significant increase in energy consumption in summer. Rising energy prices led to the need for turning to performance assessment tools and Green Building (GB) rating systems to address energy challenges in Egypt and to evaluate and improve buildings energy performance during design stages.
There are various world-known certification systems and rating tools such as Passive House (PH), LEED and BREEAM. This research focuses on PH standards considered nowadays to be the most rigorous willing energy-based standards in building, however, PH standards generally focuses on ventilation and energy used within the building. While, other standards focus on dealing with environment-friendly aspects of the building. PH standards was advanced as an energy-efficient solution to high electric bills, as well, it is characterized by special high thermal comfort. Main goal of the research is to investigate applicability and effectiveness of using PH standards to achieve energy-efficient performance and improve thermal comfort of office buildings in Egypt.
Research examines PH standards concept, its importance, as well as reasoning behind its creation. However, it provides an overview of PH components, principles and innovative techniques to optimize new buildings during design and implementation for renewable energy use. Additionally, research provides general information on PH building certification, required documents, and PH criteria with building performance requirements for achieving high energy-efficient standard. Likewise, this research provides case studies for energy-efficiency performance in certified PH office buildings.
Cairo city is selected as the research area for modeling three new office buildings by using PH standards, case studies are performed looking at how could PH certification criteria be met in new office buildings. Detailed simulation-based energy performance of the new proposed office buildings was analyzed by e-QUEST software, as well, cost would be looked at to determine whether PH criteria is viable in Egypt, in immediate or distant future. Likewise, final results were that PH standards can be applied to achieve energy-efficient performance of mid-rise administrative buildings in Egypt.
