Abstract

A multi-body wave energy converter consisting of three floats is modeled as a two body problem and optimised to enhance its power generation using the response surface optimisation method. The optimisation method focuses on two input parameters, namely; the floats’ diameters and, the spacing in a particular sea state. A frequency domain analysis is performed for the WEC model scaled at 1:50 in regular and irregular waves. The generated WEC model is numerically validated against numerical and experimental data available in the literature. Validations show good agreement against the unmoored model’s added mass, radiation damping, response amplitude operators, power generation and, capture width ratio. The selected sea states for optimisation has a moderate occurrence in various sites where, the significant wave heights of 0.04 and 0.06 meters at a peak wave period of 1.0 second are selected, which corresponds to 2.0 and 3.0 meters at approximately 7 seconds in full scale. A JONSWAP wave spectrum is applied in unidirectional wave headings. The optimised floats diameters and spacing under the selected sea state show good enhancement of the generated mean absorbed power.
