Abstract

Background: Cellulite is a multifactorial disorder and has a high prevalence in women and despite no morbidity; it causes great dissatisfaction and negative influence on quality of life. Purpose: of this study was to investigate the effect of monopolar radiofrequency on thigh cellulite in obese women. Methods: thirty participants suffering from grade 2 or 3 cellulite in their thighs, their age ranged from 25-35 yrs old and their BMI ranged from 25-35 kg/m2 were selected from outpatient clinics of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Kasr-Alainy Hospital. They were randomly assigned into 2 groups of equal number, group (A) control group (n=15) followed low caloric diet (1200 kcal) for 5 weeks and group (B) study group (n=15) followed the same diet in addition to monopolar radiofrequency 3 sessions per week for 5 weeks with duration of each session 40 minutes. Evaluation of weight and BMI were done for all participants in both groups (A&B) before starting the study and at the end of 5 weeks of treatment. The grade of cellulite was determined by using Nurenberger-Muller scale, the thigh circumference for each woman in both groups was measured at 3 points: the widest part of the thigh, 10 cms and 20 cms above the upper border of the patella was measured by tape measurement and subcutaneous fatty layer of thighs was measured by Ultrasonography. Results showed that there was significant decrease of the mean values of weight, BMI, thigh circumference at widest part, 10 cms and 20 cms above upper border of the patella, subcutaneous fat thickness and grade of cellulite post treatment between both groups (A&B) with (P>0.05*) and this significant reduction in favor of group (B)
