Abstract

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a prevalent complication of DM and account for significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditures. the International Diabetes Federation reports that 9.1–26.1 million people will develop DFUs annually among diabetic patients. These numbers are alarming, as the clinical implications for the development of a DFU are not negligible.
The present work aimed to assess severity of diabetic foot ulcer among diabetic patients, identify risk factors of ulcer severity and assess quality of life among studied patients.
To achieve such an aim, a cross-sectional study was conducted at the vascular surgery clinic in Menoufia university hospital at Menoufia Governorate – Egypt on patients with diabetic foot ulcer who attended the clinic during the period of data collection from the 1st of May 2020 till the end of February 2021.
Seventy patients were selected by simple random sample from the vascular surgery clinic until the sample size was reached during their attendance. The sample was calculated based on the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Egypt.
The selected patients were interviewed through a structured self-administrated questionnaire followed by a clinical examination. The questionnaire is composed of five parts: (i) Basic identification data (personal and socioeconomic data) (ii) Diabetes-related data (iii) Foot Care Knowledge questionnaire (15 questions) to assess the knowledge about foot care. (iv) Nottingham Assessment of Functional Foot Care questionnaire (NAFFC) (29 questions) which was used for assessing the patients‘ practice of foot care. (v) quality of life questionnaire (fifty-seven questions for assessing the quality of life using Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale (DFS). The clinical examination included careful inspection to determine the severity of DFU based on Wagner’s Classification, BMI calculation, Blood pressure measuring, peripheral vascular examination and peripheral neuropathy examination.
