Abstract
Liver cirrhosis is the clinical end stage of different entities of chronic
liver disease. Portal hypertension (PH), which is portal pressure greater than
10-12 mmHg, is a major complication of cirrhosis. As a sequel of PH,portosystemic collaterals,esophageal varices, and portal hypertensive
gastropathy develop.Esophageal varices (EVs) occur in 43% and 76% in Child A and Child C patients, respectively. Variceal bleeding accounts for 23% of cases of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB).Many classifications were introduced for grading of EVs as Degradi’s, Paquet’s, Conn’s, Baveno’s, and the Japanese classification.
