Abstract

Background: Though medical care is vital for our life, health and well-being, the biomedical waste generation from the medical activities is hazardous, toxic, and even lethal owing to high potential for different types of diseases transmission. Aim: this study aimed to assess the effect of biomedical waste management program on knowledge and practices of nurses at family health centers. Design: A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was used. Sitting: the study was conducted in 4 Family Health Centers at Cairo Governorate. Sample: all nurses (84 nurses) working at the 4 Family Health Centers.Tools: Nurses{u2019} demographic data questionnaire, Biomedical waste management knowledge, and Nurses biomedical waste management observational checklist were used in the current study. Results: the current study revealed that, 96.4% of nurses were females, 38.1% of nurses aged from 30 to <40 years old, 51.2% of them had {u2265}15 years of experience; 56% of them didn’t receive any training related to biomedical waste management. There was a significant improvement in nurses{u2019} knowledge and practice mean scores in post test and follow-up compared to pretest mean scores. As well, a highly statistically significant difference was found between nurses’ knowledge and practice toward biomedical waste management in pretest, post test and follow-up (p<0.001)
