Abstract

Background: patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PF OA) is a significant source of knee pain and disability. Over recent years, conservative management options for PF OA have been investigated, yet there is a gap between their efficacy and an understanding of their mechanism. Purpose: to decide whether females with PF OA ascend stairs with different muscular recruitment strategies contrasted with controls, and to investigate the effect of core stability on PF OA.Methods: Thirty-one females with PF OA and 11 controls (group C) were recruited. Muscular recruitment strategies (onset and duration) of multifidus, transversus abdominus (TrA), gluteus medius (GM), and vasti measured by quantitative Electromyography were acquired during stair ascent. Patients were further randomly assigned into two groups, group A (n=14) and group B (n=17). Patients in both groups received a traditional physical therapy treatment, but group (B) received additional core stability exercise. All patients were evaluated for pain, functional performance, and recruitment strategies pre and post-treatment. Results: The results showed a non-significant difference between females with PF OA and controls regarding all tested variables except for the onset of multifidus. Also, among all tested variables, pain, functional performance, and multifidus onset were significantly improved in group B, yet there was a non-significant difference between group A and B
