Abstract

Introduction Immune thrombocytopenic purpura affects approximately 100 per million of the general population per year, and about half of these cases occur in children. First-line therapies of acute, persistent and chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) include intravenous immunoglobulin, IV anti-D and corticosteroids. Objective To investigate the role of high dose dexamethasone in the treatment of persistent and chronic ITP in children Materials and methods Ten patients diagnosed as immune thrombocytopenic purpura (persistent or chronic) are subjected to full history taking and laboratory investigations with reviewing of the medical records. They were given high dose dexamethasone (0.6mg/kg/day orally for 4 days every 4 weeks for 6 cycles with a maximum dose of 40 mg/day). Results Response was observed in three patients (30%) whereas seven patients (70%) had no response. Conclusion High dose dexamethasone could represent a cheaper strategy for management of persistent and chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura in children, it can achieve some valuable therapeutic effects, but further studies on large number of patients are required to ensure this observation
