Abstract

Background: the artichoke extracts (AEs) are well known for their potent cytotoxic effect against breast cancer. pH-sensitive niosomes are one of the smartest targeted drug delivery systems (TDDSs) that enhance the efficacy of the anticancer therapeutics.Aim: the objective of this work is to examine the anticancer activity of the AE encapsulated into pH-sensitive niosomes against breast cancer, both in vitro and in vivo. Method: the activity of AEs from different parts (inner leaves, outer leaves, cup and mixture of outer and inner leaves as well as cup) was tested in vitro to select the most active extract. The cup extract was encapsulated into the prepared pH-sensitive niosome and examined against breast cancer both in vitro and in vivo, in parallel to the other drug forms, free AE and plain niosomes. Female Swiss albino mice were divided into five groups as follows: normal, control and three treated groups. Each treated group received 300 oL (25 mg/mL diluted to 1:5 v/v by PBS) of one drug form. Treatment lasted for two weeks. The immunological and histopathological parameters were examined. Results: a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in the tumour volume and weight in the group treated with the AE-loaded niosomes was observed compared to control. A significant (P < 0.05) increased concentration of IL-12 was detected in free AE group compared to control. A significant (P < 0.05) increased concentration of IFN-{uF067} was detected in free AE group compared to control
