Abstract

SUMMARY Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common subtype of dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by cognitive dysfunction, loss of memory, impairment of attention, and a progressive decline in language function. Scopolamine is a muscarinic cholinergic receptor antagonist that is used to induce cognitive dysfunction in experimental animals. Irisin is a hormone secreted by myocytes and is proposed to be a bridge between exercise and metabolic homeostasis.it also influences hippocampal neurogenesis and used as treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Donepezil hydrochloride is a selective inhibitor of cholinesterase that
prevents the hydrolysis of the residual acetylcholine in the brain and represents the best pharmacological tool to attenuate cognitive disturbances in patients with mild to moderate AD. The present study was performed to compare the effect of irisin and donepezil on cognitive function in cases of scopolamine induced Alzheimer’s disease like condition in male albino rats. The present work was carried on (50) albino male rats; the animals
were categorized into five groups (10 rats each): group 1: control group The animals of this group were injected daily with 1 ml saline intraperitoneally (i.p) for 15 days.
