Abstract Over the last few decades, the world has witnessed a tremendously increasing demand for probiotic supplements. Probiotics are gaining a solid reputation owing to their prodigious health promoting effects. These effects are rigorously investigated through the constantly expanding scientific research grabbing the attention to probiotics’ valuable health impact (1). Probiotics can be defined as viable microorganisms that confer beneficial effects when they are administered in adequate quantities (2). The use of probiotics to promote health and wellness dates back many years ago. Over a century ago, the Russian scientist, Elie Metchnikoff, was the first to postulate a link between the consumption of host-friendly bacteria, that are abundant in yoghurt, and the enhancement of health and delayed senility. |
