Abstract

Dynamic bandwidth allocation in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) presents a
key issue for providing efficient and fair utilization of the EPON upstream bandwidth, while
supporting the Quality of Service QoS requirements of different traffic classes. Rare related works
have addressed a qualitative and quantitative comparison On the other hand, wireless access
technologies, such as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), are constantly
investigated, on the other hand, are constantly investigated to improve their transmission
bandwidth, coverage, and QoS. They also support mobility and have a cheap implementation, as
opposed to fiber-based solutions. Nonetheless, wireless networks typically have a restricted
wireless spectrum, resulting in the assignment of minimal bandwidth to each user, when a large
number of consumers share the network services.
The integration of EPON and WiMAX is a novel research topic that has received extensive
interest from both industry and academia. The major motivations behind the integration of EPON
and WiMAX involve the potential benefits of Fixed Mobile Convergence as single network
infrastructure is used to provide both wired and wireless access services and a good match of
capacity hierarchy between EPON and WiMAX by using EPON as a backhaul (or feeder) to
connect multiple disperse WiMAX base stations.
This thesis provides a detailed comparison and a classification study for a large number of
DBA algorithms in EPON integrated with WiMAX, adopting time delay and throughput as
performance indicators. Strictly speaking, this work provides two new algorithms for dynamic
bandwidth allocation and semi-dynamic bandwidth allocation for the integrated process between
the EPON and WiMAX based on the auction process.
