Abstract

In the search for an improved three-dimensional (3D) understanding of anatomical relationships in the pelvic floor and changes in muscle integrity, which might correlate with pelvic floor dysfunction, recently the use of diffusion tensorimaging (DTI) with fibre tractography was proposed for the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the pelvic floor muscles.Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with fiber tracking is a MRI technique, which has emerged as a noninvasive tool to describe microstructure characteristics and organization of anisotropic tissues (e.g., muscle fibers and nerves) by means of directionality. It offers different parameters, such as mean fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) that can provide a quantitative description of tissue organization and integrity. Quantifying DTI and fiber tractography certainly offers an innovative and strong tool, which might be able to detect microstructural abnormalities
