Abstract Background: Hypothyroidism is a common endocrinal disorder characterized by decrease thyroid hormone, caused by disorders in thyroid gland, pituitary gland or hypothalamus. Hypothyroidism affects nearly every organ in our body including CNS, heart, bone, autonomic nervous system, Gastrointestinal tract, metabolism, and respiratory system Pulmonary consequences of hypothyroidism are very important due to long term effects of hypothyroidism on pulmonary functions as insufficient thyroxin level leads to decreased pulmonary function (FVC, FEV1) and exercise intolerance which improved after being treated by hormonal replacement therapy Methodology: thirty patients with confirmed congenital hypothyroidism compared to thirty healthy controls regarding the pulmonary complications through detailed history taking, clinical examination, anthropometric measures, and Pulmonary function test (spirometry). Results: The case group had statistically significant higher body mass index, and lower height standard deviation score (SDS) than the healthy controls. There were no statistically significant differences between case group and control group concerning pulmonary function test parameters (FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC %, FEF75, FEF50, FEF25).Patients were complaint to treatment showed statistically significant better (FVC, FEV1, FEF75) than the non-complaint patients. Conclusion: Good compliance to thyroid replacement therapy affects prognosis and preserve the pulmonary function |
