Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of arthrocentesis using two different materials {u2018}saline solution{u2019} and {u2018}lactated ringer solution{u2019} in the improvement of reduced mouth opening and in pain control in patients who complained from anterior disc displacement with reduction. Methodology: A double blinded randomized controlled clinical study included patients with unilateral anterior disc displacement with reduction. Their ages ranged from 18 to 55 years old. The 22 patients were divided randomly into 2 groups 11 in each, Study group (saline group) and the control group (lactate ringer solution). Each patient had received double punctured arthrocentesis in both groups under local anesthesia. The main variables were maximal mouth opening distance that was measured by digital caliper in mm, and pain severity that was assessed at different follow up periods using a visual analog scale. Results: The saline group showed a significant difference with (p= 0.002), and the lactate ringer group got a significant difference with (p= 0.009). There was improvement in maximum mouth opening and TMJ pain immediately postoperatively, after 6 and 12 weeks. There were no significant differences in results of both groups. The saline group showed a significant difference from preoperative till 12 weeks with (p= 0.010).
