Abstract

The main objective of this study is to characterize some of the most important
Egyptian marble types, determine their uses, study the effect of geological factors on physical-mechanical properties, quantify the correlation between different marble properties, and to obtain the optimum transportation alternatives among marble quarries
and some important marble processing zones In this research, the necessary tests were done on six types of Egyptian marble named Teriesta, Galala, Elsheikh Fadl Sunny, Elminya Sunny and Selvia, and Zaafarana The tests were physical, mechanical (according to ASTM standards) and chemical as well as petrographic study and mineral composition The correlation was determined between each of (apparent porosity, dry compressive strength, and abrasion resistance) and all other studied properties Besides, assessment the feasible and optimum transportation alternatives among these marble quarries and the most important marble processing zones were carried out from analysis of the results and investigations Zaafarana marble is the strongest type and Elminya Selvia is the weakest one All types can be used as crushed stone in different purposes Teriesta, Galala, Elsheikh Fadl Sunny, and Zaafarana marble types can be used in all indoor purposes like applications subjected to flooring or stairs, in addition to walls, tabletops, and other decoration purposes after treatment and polishing according to different uses, more than Elminya Sunny and Selvia marble types which are not preferred
to be used in applications subjected to flooring or stairs, but they can be used in walls and other decoration purposes (indoor applications) Geological parameters have a great effect on physical-mechanical properties of marble There were very significant correlation relationships between each of (apparent
porosity, dry compressive strength, and abrasion resistance) and other studied marble properties Therefore, these properties can be roughly detected through their regression equations with other properties Seven assignments were determined using linear programming model to transport the production from the studied marble quarries to the selected manufacturing places All of them were feasible and the last one (seventh) was the optimal. The total transportation costs were decreased by 28.15% from the first program to the seventh optimum one.
