Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the relation between vitamin D deficiency and preeclampsia. Methods: An observational analytical case-control study that includes 90 pregnant women who will attend the Obstetrics and Gynecology hospital, Cairo University hospital, during the period from March 2019 until the end of August 2019. They were divided into 2 groups; a study group and a control group. The study group will include 45 pregnant patients with preeclampsia, while the control group will include 45 pregnant patients who are normotensive with no medical diseases. Both groups include women with singleton pregnancies and are comparable in age, parity and gestational age of the study group Immunoenzymetric assay was used for the in vitro quantitative measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 and D3 (25OH-D2 and 25OH-D3) in serum. Recent literature has suggested the following ranges for the classification of 25 OH Vitamin D status: Level ng/mL Severe deficiency <10 Deficient <20 Insufficient 20-29 Results: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the studied groups reached 99%. Median serum vitamin D level was 5 ng/ml in the preeclampsia group and 5.5 ng/ml in the normotensive group (p=0.305) 95.6% of women in the preeclampsia group had severe deficiency (Vitamin D levels <10 ng/ml) compared to 88.9% of women in the normotensive group. All women (100%) in the preeclampsia group had vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/ml) as compared to 97.8% in the normotensive group but this was not statistically significant
