Abstract

Background: Nursing is a critical factor in determining the hospitals’ quality of care and the nature of patient outcomes. In order to be effective, organizations should have the required quality and quantity of human resources and properly utilize them. Aim: The current study aimed to explore the relationship between nursing workload and quality of nursing care at a selected hospital in Menoufia governorate. Design: A descriptive correlational design was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted in a selected hospital in Menoufia governorate .Subjects: Convenient sample of 250 staff nurses working in all shifts in the selected hospital recruited.Tools: The Nursing Workload Questionnaire and The Quality of Nursing Care Observational Checklist were used to collect the data .Results :The highest Nursing workload factors rated by staff nurses were related to the(interpersonal , environmental ,administrative and nursing factors) (93.84%, 93.65%, 92.97% and 92.80% respectively). As well, the highest mean percentage of quality of nursing care dimensions that provided by staff nurses was for patient safety dimension (84,87%), whereas the lowest was for nursing care dimension (31,65%).Conclusion: There was a high nursing workload level and high percentage of unmet quality nursing care standards in the selected hospital with a negative correlation between nursing workload and quality nursing care. Recommendations: Nursing workload and quality of nursing care should be periodically addressed to assure creation of positive work atmosphere and meeting the standards of nursing care quality
