Abstract

In the light of possible effect of climate change on water availability, a crucial aspect for viticulture future is the selection of new rootstocks exhibiting adaptability to drought stress. In this context and considering recent literature, the present research has been carried out to examine the efficiency of crossing and gamma irradiation as tools for breeding new grapevine rootstocks and develop evaluation methods to hasten and increase the efficiency of grapevine rootstocks breeding process. In this study, Ramsey and Dog Ridge, as maternal parents, Paulsen 1103 (1103P), and Ruggeri 140 (140 RU), as male parents, were crossed to obtain new rootstock progenies. Also, single node cuttings of 1103P and Ramsey were treated with six different doses of Gamma radiation (0, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 Gy) to induce mutations. In order to determine the most sensitive indicators of drought tolerance, morphological and physiological parameters of grapevine rootstocks (Paulsen 1103, Ruggeri 140, Ramsey, and Dogridge), were compared under water stress conditions. The drought stress was induced under in vitro conditions in DWK medium supplemented with PEG at different concentrations (0, 1.5%, 3%, 4.5% and 6%). While under in vivo conditions the studied rootstock were exposed to three different irrigation regimes (100% (control), 60% and 40% of field capacity). According to the obtained results, the recommended male parent for both maternal rootstocks is RU140, while P1103 showed a degree of cross incompatibility with both female parents
