Abstract

Pressurized irrigation systems (PIS) are complex infrastructural entities with a combination of pipes, pumps, reservoirs, tanks, etc. Each component is designed as a compromise between economic and technical considerations. PIS represents one of the most expensive entities in any infrastructure. Simulation of PIS within a looped pipe network is a complex task involving solving a system of non-linear equations. EPANET is a computer program (Rossman, 1993) that performs extended period simulation of hydraulic and water quality behavior within pressurized pipe networks. This thesis aims to propose a model based on PSO to improve total leakage in a (pressurized) sprinkler irrigation system. The proposed approach is to modify the pipe diameters used in the network using the optimization algorithm PSO to modify the network pipe diameters that meet the requirements of the network with the use of EPANET to calculate Head-Loss at each node as well as calculate the total leakage before and after optimization. The simulation experimental work solves a standard bench-mark problem of New York using this algorithm. The first simulation of the network is done using simulation software; EPANET from which integrate the head values obtained into MATLAB and the criteria for necessary head is checked. Further, the selection of different diameters is done using the PSO algorithm and their cost estimated.
