Abstract

Background: Perioperative shivering is a common problem during anaesthesia. Apart from physical warming many pharmacological and non-pharmacological prevention and treatment modalities are present.Ondansetron has been used for preventing shivering during anaesthesia in several studies. Granisetronhas been recently evaluated for its perioperative anti shivering effect. Patients & Methods: 180 patients, undergoing elective surgeries under spinal anaesthesia with 15 mg of hyperbaric 0.5% bupivacaine plus 25 æg fentanyl was used for spinal anaesthesia. Before intrathecal injection, the patients were randomly divided into 2 equal groups, each group included 90 patients who received IV ondansetron 8 mg or granisetron 1mg. Vital signs , shivering and side effects i.e. hypotension, nausea and vomiting, were recorded. Results: Number of patients who developed shivering after spinal anesthesia was 23 patients (25%) in ondansetron group, 11 patients (12.5%) in granisetron group. Also, there was no significant difference between two groups (p= 0.288). Conclusion: Prophylactic intravenous injection of Granisetron (1mg) and ondansetron (8mg) before spinal anesthesia were effective in reducing the incidence of post spinal shivering, however, Granisteron was more effective than ondansetron
