Abstract
Anterior knee pain (AKP) is a common complication after intramedullary nailing of tibia. The exact etiology of AK is unknown, and the average incidence ranged between 17-57%. Protrusion of the nail is one of the causes of AKP after nailing tibia. Fourty one (41) patients were included in the study. They were admitted to Tanta University Hospital , Egypt suffering from tibial shaft fracture and treated with intramedullary nailing of the tibia. All patients were assessed after at least 6 months of follow-up by taking history, clinical examination, assessment of healing and radiological assessment. There were 24 (58.54%) males, and 17 (41.46%) females. According to the visual analogue scale (VAS), patients were divided into 26 patients (63.4%) without anterior knee pain and 15 patients (36.6%) with anterior knee pain. The group with AKP was farther divided into 3 patients (20%) with protruding nails and 12 patients (80%) without protruding nails. The mean age of patients was 30.81±8.61 years in those without pain and 37.96±10.30 years in patients with AKP. 6 patients (40%) had moderate pain and 7 patients (46.67%) had mild pain, and only 2 patients (13.33%) had severe pain. There was a statistically significant relation between age, protrusion of nail, but there was no statistically significant relation between sex, side affected, time lapsed after surgery, occupation and the occurrence of pain.
