Abstract

This thesis studies the Aten religion during the Amarna period to understand what Akhenaten called for if it was monotheism or Atonism.By studying the fixed and portable antiquities from Amarna, as many scholars of this period have interpreted the Aten religion as a call to monotheism that refuses to recognize the gods. However, with the study of the fixed and portable antiquities from Amarna, it becomes clear that there is a severe contradiction with this interpretation, as many other deities were worshiped in Amarna on a large scale and with complete freedom without any hindrance. In fact, Akhenaten himself mentioned the names of many other gods on the boundary steales in Amarna. As well as depicting it in many situations that were associated with other gods, and many of the senior officials of Amarna kept their names that were associated with the names of other gods without any objection from Akhenaten. All of this contradicts what was presented by many researchers about the Amarna religion, and this is what we will discuss in this Thesies.
