Abstract

SUMMARY
Substance dependence can be defined as the need for repeated doses of the psychoactive substances or alcohol to feel good or to avoid feeling bad. Dependence involves a cluster of cognitive, behavioural, and physiologic symptoms that indicate a person has impaired control of psychoactive substance use and continues use of the substance despite adverse consequences (Maurer and Smith, 2006).
The prevalence rate of people with substance dependency in Egypt is 1,119,373 (www.wrongdiagnosis.com, 2007). One of the services that is available and serves a large number of patients with substance dependence in Egypt is the hotline. So, in 2007, the number of cases on hotline by phone was (31,563), number of follow up cases that have files was (8,781), number of cases stopped substance dependence was 2,929 (www.drcontrol.org, 2007).
Aim of the Study
The aim of the study was to assess behavioural and emotional problems among hospitalized patients with substance dependency in the Institute of Psychiatry, Ain Shams University.
Research hypothesis
The substance dependence causes some problems including, depression, aggression, low self esteem and psychopathic deviation.
This study was carried out in at Unit of Addiction the Institute of Psychiatry, Ain Shams University. This sample included 64 patients (61) males and (3) females, their age ranged from 18 to 54.
To answer the research hypothesis, the tools used for data collection were:
A socio demographic data sheet, designed in the form of multiple choice questions in Arabic language. It included the following parts:
The first part was concerned with personal data, the second part dealt with scholastic history, the third part was related to family and past history, and the fourth part displayed pattern of substance dependence.
Four scales were used such as, Beck Depression Inventory, Self-esteem Scale, Psychopathic Scale, and the Adolescents and Youth Aggression Behavior Scale Analysis of data was done by using suitable and proper statistical tests Arithmetic mean, standard deviation, and chi square was used to test the difference between two mean.
The findings of the study showed the following results:
o Most of the patients were males (95.3%).
o More than half (56.2%) of the sample’s age lies in the age range of 20-30 years.
