Abstract Background: It is vital to increase nursing actions as patient advocates and advocates for patient rights among nurses. Aim: assessment of mental health nurses knowledge regarding patient` rights and patients` advocacy rights. Methods: A descriptive study. Sample: A convenient sample of 150 male and female nurses. Setting: was conducted in the Beni-Suef Psychiatric Hospital. Tools: Using a self-administered questionnaire sheet; Part1; nurses` knowledge regarding mental PT`s rights, Part 2 nurses` knowledge regarding mental PT``s advocacy rights. Results: nurses mean age ranged between 23-50 years, 35.9±7.6 SD, females (90.7%), (45.3%) with diploma degree. 61.3% had 5 to10 years of psychiatric nursing experience, and 19.3% had previous training in quality care. Nursing knowledge about mental patient’s rights 42.7% were in good knowledge, 39.3% were moderate, 18% were in poor knowledge. Nurses` Patients advocacy rights knowledge; 70% were in good knowledge, 16.7% were moderate and 13.3% were in poor knowledge. Statistically significant relation between work characteristics and nursing good knowledge for patient`s rights & advocacy (P<0.05). Conclusion: Mental health nurses had good knowledge score towards patient’s advocacy rights and patient rights were closely related to their work experience years in psychiatric departments and their training courses in quality. Recommendations: In-service training programs for nurses are commended. Further research is suggested to intensifying in-service training of nursing staff about the practices of patients’ rights with intense of psychiatric patient’s advocacy rights.
