Abstract

An accurate gestational age is vital to the diagnosis of fetal growth disorders and the timing of elective delivery, failure of which could either result in iatrogenic prematurity or post maturity, with their perinatal morbidity and mortality. In developing countries, a significant number of pregnant women tend to seek antenatal care late in pregnancy, without a clear date of their last menstrual period.
Ultrasound has played a vital role in the estimation of fetal gestational age and has become an integral part of obstetric practice. Sonographic estimation of gestational age is derived from calculation based on fetal measurement which serves as indirect indicator of gestational age. Numerous equations regarding the relationship between the fetal biometric parameters has been described and have proven early antenatal ultrasound to be an objective and accurate means of establishing fetal gestational age.
Giving that the fetal kidney has been shown a steady growth throughout pregnancy and is unaffected by growth abnormalities, the aim of this work is to evaluate the accuracy of fetal kidney length in estimation of gestational age and its correlation with the established parameters in late second and third trimester of pregnancy.
This is a cross sectional study that was conducted on 400 pregnant women from those who attend to obstetrics and gynecology out-patient clinic at Menoufia University Hospital. The study was approved by the faculty research ethical committee.
Pregnant women with singleton pregnancy, viable fetus, 24-40wk of pregnancy with regular cycle were eligible for the study. Women with history of diabetes or hypertension in pregnancy, uncertain last menstrual period, polyhydramnios, oligohydramnios, intrauterine growth restriction, abnormal fetal renal morphology, gross fetal hydronephrosis, or any fetal congenital malformation were excluded from the study.
