Abstract

Refractive Surgery is a very evolving field, new emerging technologies such as FS laser made a huge advancement in the surgical refractive procedures. FS-LASIK and SMILE are common procedures used today to correct refractive errors.
In this study, sixty eyes (30 patients) with age group ranging from 20 to 40 years of age; divided equally into 2 groups; group A included 15 patients (30 eyes) and group B included 15 patients (30 eyes). Both groups had undergone FS LASIK and SMILE procedures respectively. The aim was to compare the obtained results between FS-LASIK and SMILE in terms of the UCVA, refractive predictability, efficacy, safety and dry eye tests (Schirmer I and TBUT).
Most of the patients’ preoperative preparations were done a day prior to the surgery day. Follow up visits were done at 1st day and 3rd month postoperatively.
Both types of surgeries were uneventful and showed excellent results. In the 2nd follow up visit (3 months postoperatively); 93.33% and 90% of the FS LASIK and SMILE groups respectively were within ±0.5 D of the target refraction. Also, 80% and 76.67% of the treated eyes had 1.0 or better UCVA in both FS-LASIK and SMILE groups respectively.

Regarding the changes in the corneal asphericity (Q-value), we found that the was a statistically significant increase in the Q-value postoperatively in both FS-LASIK and SMILE groups respectively making the corneal surface more oblate and less prolate.
As for the dry eye parameters, the FS-LASIK group showed statistically significant decrease in both Schirmer I and TBUT tests from the baseline preoperative values. On the other side, the SMILE group showed statistically significant decrease in the TBUT test only.
