Abstract

Behavioral addictions are addictions to activities or processes as gambling, eating, tanning, sexuality, shopping and work with the younger age group is the most vulnerable (Dutta E et al., 2018).
Griffiths (1995) published the first paper on technological addictions, there has been a marked increase in research into internet addiction, online videogame addiction, mobile phone addiction, social media addiction, etc. There have also been other new technologically related mental health disorders such as nomophobia (no mobile phone phobia; King et al., 2010), technoference (constant intrusions of technology into everyday life; McDaniel, 2015) and cyberchondria (feeling ill after searching online for the symptoms of illnesses; Lewis, 2006).
Recent research shows that the frequency and the degree of addiction to selfie may be linked to some personality traits.( Baiocco et al., 2017) In 2015, a study identified a relationship between the narcissistic and psychopathic personality and the tendency of posting a large number of selfies online.(Fox et al., 2015 ) Two years later, a study found a significant relationship between publishing a selfie and narcissism among men(Sorokowski P et al., 2018) and another one showed that agreeableness and openness traits are correlated to only looking at others’ selfies and that agreeableness and extraversion traits are correlated to interacting with others’ selfies on social media(Choi Tae Rang et al., 2016)
Based on that, the current study aimed to assess prevalence of selfie phenomenon among university students, to demonstrate it’s relationship with psychiatric , personality disorders and its effect on level of functioning.
The study involved convenience sample of 200 students with no cases dropped out.
