Abstract The main aim of this thesis is to analyze Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter (1850) and its translation EL Shara EL Qurmozia (1986) by Gazebia Sidqi. Deep grammatical analysis of Hawthorne’s eight chapters is carried out based on Leech et al’s (1982) and EL Rajhi’s (1998). The results of the study indicate that Hawthorne’s preference goes for complex sentence structure than other types of sentences in his writing, i.e., compound, simple or P-less structure. Thus, source text language is complex in language. This adds extra efforts to the task of the translator who is expected to transfer the same complexity of structure as well as to pertain the same patterns of focus as that of ST in her TT. Furthermore, the current study reaches the conclusion that Hawthorne’s choice of language reflects certain syntactic features which can be regarded as SL grammatical features. These are: retention of the most complex structure of the sentence to the end of the sentence (with the proportion 51.926 %), the grammatical feature of nesting (with the proportion 72.293 %), the grammatical device of fronting of different items, i.e. (subject (S), object (O), or complement (Cs, Co)) (with the proportion 46.238%), the use of the grammatical feature of delaying grammatical structure (with the proportion 46.238%), the process of the post modification of the head of the s. o. or c. (any structure) (with the proportion 41.467%). |
