Abstract Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance is a major concern that we are facing nowadays. This is due to antibiotic abuse with lack of new antibiotic discovery and development of bacteria that are resistant to the last option of medications available in our society. This will affect the patients and the country in many ways that may end with patient deaths and consumption of country resources. This raised the importance of implementation of an antimicrobial stewardship strategy to limit the use of unnecessary antibiotics and subsequently decrease the infection rates and achieve better patient outcome. Aim of work: 1-Control of antibiotics abuse 2-Reduction of infection rate. 3-Decrease drug costs. 4-Reduce length of hospital stay. Methods:We conducted a prospective study in the surgical neonatal ICU in Cairo University Specialized Pediatric Hospital over a period of nine months divided into pre-implementation phase that started on Jul1st , 2016till September 30th , 2016 followed by an ASP phase that started from October 1st , 2016 till March 31st, 2017 in which we applied the antibiotic guidelines approved by the ASP committee. Data were collected in the two phases and subjected for analysis. Collected data included demographic data of the patients included in the study, prescribed antibiotics, lab investigations, length of stay and outcome |
