Abstract

This parallel, randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare the intensity and incidence of post-operative pain after the usage of manual or rotary ProTaper systems, in which the patients were equally allocated at random to receive one of two interventions. Forty-six patients with vital or non-vital, mandibular, posterior teeth without periapical pathosis were endodontically treated in a single visit. Instrumentation was done using either manual ProTaper files (group B) or rotary ProTaper files (group A). Irrigation was done using 2.6% NaOCl and 17% EDTA. Finally, the canals were flushed with distilled water. Pain was assessed using a numerical rating scale (NRS) pre-operatively and post-operatively after 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 7days after obturation. All demographic data, clinical and radiographic findings and NRS scores obtained from patients were statistically analyzed. When comparing the median NRS scores in the two groups, rotary ProTaper group showed statistically significantly lower pain level than manual ProTaper group at 6 hours (p=0.036), and 12 hours (p=0.028)
