Abstract

Designing and detailing buildings for lateral loads require satisfying strength, lateral drift and stability to control the building damage. Accordingly, most domestic or international design codes have adopted a second order check to be provided as a necessary step to assess the overall performance of lateral loads resisting systems and to determine the needed magnification for the first order straining actions for their elements. In this study the adopted approaches followed by different codes for determining the second order magnification factor and the overall stability check for frames have been assessed in view of the results from second order analysis (p-delta analysis) and advanced buckling analysis provided by finite element. The basic relationship between the overall buckling of the building and the second order magnification factor has been discussed. The influences of three main parameters, namely; 1) the level for the design lateral load; 2) the overall slenderness of the building and; 3) the strength of the construction materials on the second order magnification factor have been studied. Based on this study it has been concluded that the former mentioned factors can severely affect the magnitude of the second order magnification and the overall stability
