Abstract

Single fiber electromyography (SFEMG) is the most sensitive clinical neurophysiological test for neuromuscular junction disorders. Objective: The aim of this study is to establish reference values for SFEMG in the normal adult Egyptians regarding different age groups and to compare the results of mean jitter recorded by the disposable concentric needle electrode (CNE) with that of the reusable SFEMG needle electrode in the volitional method of recording, for the frontalis and the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) muscles. Methods: This study included 191 healthy Egyptian subjects of both genders. Their ages ranged between 20 and 50 years. Stimulated and volitional (using single fiber needle and CNE) SFEMG were done examining the frontalis and the EDC muscles, 46 muscles for the stimulated technique in the frontalis, 47 for the stimulated technique in the EDC muscle, 52 for the volitional technique in the frontalis (25 with single fiber needle and 27 with CNE) and 46 for the EDC muscle in the volitional technique (23 with single fiber needle and 23 with CNE). Normal range of the mean jitter value was calculated as mean + 2SD which included 95% of normal population
