Abstract

The creation of bacteria free environment in root canal and at root apex remains the goal of endodontists. Thus, all attempts and researches are made to reach this goal to promote the healing of chronic periapical lesions conventionally without the need of endodontic surgery. Despite the fact that endodontic surgery has reliable results owing to the fact that the diseased tissues are removed thus, favor a rapid healing of the periapical lesions, but it is an invasive approach. In recent years the interest in laser assisted endodontic treatment has arisen specially in the spectrum of disinfection of the root canal to achieve more reliable results. The Diode lasers has gained the attention of many researchers, due to its ability to penetrate deep inside the dentinal tubules and disinfect the previously unreachable bacteria which may favor the healing of periapical tissues. This study was conducted to test the ability of the use of intracanal irradiation with 980 nm Diode laser; when used in conjunction with conventional chemo-mechanical preparation; in decreasing the postoperative pain, disinfecting the root canal and thus favor the condition for periapical healing without the need to go for endodontic surgery. Fifty-six mature anterior teeth from adult patients, showing signs and symptoms of necrotic pulp and radiographic evidence of chronic periapical lesions, were selected
