Abstract Background: Obesity is ,nowadays, a major health problem. Bariatric surgery became one of the commonest methods to fight obesity. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy attained a great popularity due to its great results regarding excess body weight loss and obesity co-morbidity control. Routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy prior to bariatric surgery is still a matter of debate. However, it may have a great impact on the ongoing procedure. Aim: The purpose of this study is to assess and evaluate the role of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in obese patients prior to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at Kasr Al-Ainy hospital. Methods: One-hundred and five morbidly obese patients ,who were planned for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and had no symptoms regarding GERD, were counselled about GERD symptoms and the role of upper gastrointestinal preoperatively.They accepted to participate in the study and underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy one week before the operation.
