Abstract A pharmacognostical study ofPunica granatum var. nanafamily punicaceae was carried out. Literature survey on Punica granatum L. and Punica granatum var. nana was reviewed. A botanical study including macro- and micro-morphological characters of the plant organs were presentedfor their identification in the entire or powdered forms. In addition to, DNA fingerprinting of Punica granatum var. nana compared to Punica granatum L. Biological study was conducted including invitroevaluation of the cytotoxic activity against three cell line; breast (MCF-7), prostate (PC3) and colon (HCT-116) cell lines and antioxidant properties were assessed by measuring free radical 1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity. Moreover, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperlipidemic activities were evaluated invivo using STZ-induced diabetic rats model. Results revealed that the leaves and rindethanolic extracts exhibited the highest activities among other studied extracts. Successive fractionation was carried out to the ethanolic extracts of the most bioactive organs (leaves and rind) at two different doses (100 & 200 mg/kg b.wt) and the ethyl acetate fractions of both organs were the most active fractions |
